Handlebar flip video mount

by Eric Lepping on March 27, 2010

I’d been trying to figure out how to make a handlebar mount for my flip video camera.  I was thinking about trying one of those Gorilla Pod deals but wasn’t confident that it would stay secure.  Then I saw a twitter post from @ironmanbobby saying that he had made a simple mount.  I went to Bobby’s website and sure enough there it was.  So simple…Bobby used a handlebar reflector mount, a 1/4-20 screw and a few fasteners.  Being a former pro team mechanic I saw a way to make a few improvements and made mine.

Mounting on road bike handlebars is pretty simple.  I mounted mine next to the stem, adjusted the angle and went for a test ride.  I recruited my son as my test subject.  Not only can you see that the mount works pretty well but you also learn that bike rides make you taller!

After a quick lap around the neighbor we did a quick cul de sac criterium with a hill climb to the finish.

I’m looking forward to putting the mount to good use during next weekend’s Hell of Hunterdon.  I should be able to capture some good video on the gnarly road sectors.

I made a similar mount for my tri bike but have to tweak it a bit.  I’m having a tough time getting the camera to clear the aerobar pads.  Nothing another trip to the hardware store won’t fix, though.

I read your tweet on track training. I am training for track racing this summer in CA and am looking for a good workout routine and yours looked interesting. Do you mind sharing it with me, thanks.

I guess I should make sure that I specify what sort of track I mean! I’m doing running workouts on the track with a local group. The owners of a great local store, Bucks County Running Company, provide the coaching & workouts.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been on a velodrome. I’m thinking that the last time I rode the banking was probably 1987! I;m not sure I’m qualified to do any track cycling coaching anymore…
As for running workouts on the track I’ve found good ones in Runner’s World. I usually find a workout of value in every issue. I’m still a running newbie so my knowledge is still thin. As I said, most of my track run workouts come from Rick & Galen from Bucks County Running Company.
Thanks for reading!
